How to gift a yoky?
Gifting a yoky tag is very simple: in the store just enter the name and address of the person you want to gift the tag to. Just ensure that you enter your email address instead so that you can track the order. Also, you wouldn't want to ruin the surprise!
Unboxing the tag
Your yoky tag comes in a small reusable plastic box. Open the box and pull out the tag.
Then, pull out the tray using the finger hole in the middle. You will find a keyring, a doghook and a few pieces of double sided stickers - you can use these to attach the yoky tag to your belongings. You can use the stickers to attach the yoky tag to your laptop or phone charger (don't stick it just yet). Next, you need to install the Yoky Tag app.
Get the app
You can install the Android or iOS app for free from the links below:
iOS App on app storeAndroid app on play storeOnce you install the app, you will be asked to login. You can sign in with Facebook or Google plus (or Twitter on iOS), or using your email address. The sign in is required to create an unique link between you and your Yoky products, and is common across all Yoky products. Next you will connect your new tag to the app.
Connecting your new tag to the app
First, ensure you have turned on Bluetooth. Yoky Tag requires Bluetooth to be turned on all the time. If you are worried about its impact on battery life, fear not! Yoky tag uses Bluetooth Low Energy (4.0+) in a very efficient manner, and consumes less than 1% of your phone's battery over 24 hours.
Next, shake your tag thrice, you can shake in any direction, and the phone will automatically detect the tag and pair with it. After this, nobody else can use your tag unless you want them to.
After the tag is added, you will be asked to pick a name for it. If you want to add more than one tag, just tap the + button on the top right corner.
If you want to stop using the tag and give it to someone else, you need disown it. To disown, go to Settings -> General -> Disown, when you are connected to the tag
All setup? What next?
Great! After you add your first tag, you will be given the option of a quick walk through about what Yoky Tag can do for you. You can use the in-app tutorial or read more here on This section of the website.
Lastly, be sure to not kill the Yoky Tag app - it is designed to run in the background and will not affect your phone's battery life. We hope you have fun using the Yoky Tag!

How to find the tagged item?
To find your tagged item, open the Yoky Tag app and tap on the button in the center of the screen (tag shape with search glass icon within). If your tagged item is within the range of the phone (~ 100 feet from the phone, or upto 2 walls between the phone and the tag), then the tag will start ringing. On the app you can get an idea of how far the tag is from the phone by looking at the size of the circle in the center or the colour of the background. Try following the sound of walk around with your app, and you'll be able to find your tagged item.
If your tagged item is not within range, tapping the center button will show you the last known location of the tag on the map. If the tag is close to you on the map, walk around a bit and the app will try and connect back to the tag.
If you have multiple tags, swipe left or right on the app to access the correct screen for the tag you are looking for.
How to find the phone?
You can find your phone by shaking your Tag thrice. If your phone is within range and connected, the phone will start ringing, and the Tag will start making beeps like a metal detector to indicate distance from the phone. The closer you get to the phone, the faster the tag beeps. Remember, your phone will not make any sound if it is in silent mode (it will vibrate instead).
If your phone is not within range, the tag will make a long beep sound to indicate that it cannot find the phone.
The metal detector effect can be turned on or off in the app. Go to Settings -> Others -> Advanced to change the effect.
The tag is not in range, can it still be found?
When the tag is far away and not connected to the phone, the app will show you the last known time and location of the tag, but will not be able to actively find it for you. Once you reach a place close to the tag, you will receive a notification that the app has connected back to the tag.
Customising the sound
You can customise the search sound of both your tag and the phone. To change the sound, tap on the Music icon on the bottom of the screen; tap on the current tone to view the list of tones and select the one you prefer. You can preview the tones by tapping on them.
What if the tagged item is stolen, can others help you find your things?
Yes, as the number of Yoky Tag users grow, the crowd GPS feature can help you find lost items even if they've been moved. Crowd GPS is an opt in feature, where, whenever another phone with the Yoky Tag app comes within range of your tag, it will send you a notification updating you about the last time and place your tagged item was seen.
Of course, nobody but you will actually be able to see its location or find it. Initially, this may not be helpful, but we believe the power of crowd GPS grows as the number of Yoky Tag users grow.
Keys, wallet, handbag...what else?
With every yoky tag, we also provide a keyring, a doghook, and a few double sided stickers. So, you can use the Yoky Tag in very diverse ways - stick it to your laptop, attach it to your car to find where you parked it, or you can sleep safe in trains and buses knowing that you will be alerted if someone tries to steal your luggage. Even in airports, instead of craning your neck at baggage arrival, you can just wait to be notified that your bag is back in range.
How do alerts work?
Yoky tag works by maintaining a bluetooth low energy link with your phone. Whenever this link breaks, both your phone and tag raise an alert that you've either left your phone or your tagged item behind.
This is very useful when you are outside at a shop or a restaurant, and even when you're leaving your home or workplace.
Alerts when you leave your tagged item behind
When you leave your tagged item behind, your phone will automatically alert you (depending on the settings), by playing the alert tune. You can customise how and when you get the alerts too.
Alerts when you leave your phone behind
When you leave your phone behind, your tag will automatically make a sound to alert you (depending on the settings). You can customise how and when you get the alerts too.
Customising alerts
Yoky Tag is sometimes too eager to let you know that you've left something behind, however, at home or office you may not care about these alerts. In such cases, you can create Safe Locations by tapping on the alerts icon on the bottom left part of the screen and tapping on the Add Safe Location button.
You will be shown a map where you can tap and hold the screen for ~2 seconds to mark your safe location. The safe location is indicated with the purple pin on the map. Once you select the name for your safe location, you can customise your alerts - whether you want both the phone or tag to alert you, the volume level and the duration of the alerts.
Similarly, you can customise the alerts at a global level, when the tagged item is not in any safe location. Please note that the tag does not have GPS built it, but relies on the GPS of your smartphone, so enabling location services is critical for this feature to work.
Special considerations
There are certain conditions that need to be met for the tag to alert you. Firstly, the tag needs to be connected to your phone, so turning off Bluetooth will mean that the tag or phone will not raise alerts. Secondly, to avoid unnecessary alerts, the tag and phone need to be connected for atleast one minute for the alerts to activate. Also, after disconnection, you the distance between the phone and the tagged item needs to be close enough (~50 feet) for the alerts to reactivate.
Alerts on iOS
To be able to get alerts, it is very important that you keep Bluetooth turned on, and leave the app running in the background (killing the app by tapping the home button twice will mean that the alerts will not work until you reopen the app again).
Additionally, you need to open the Yoky Tag app after the phone restarts to get the app running again.
Lastly, when in silent mode, you iPhone will only show a notification and vibrate - there will be no sound. These constraints are due to the way iOS handles apps.
Alerts on Reconnection
When you come back in range with your tagged item, you can get a quick notification on your phone. This is useful when you use Yoky Tag with say your luggage and are waiting at the baggage arrival - instead of craning your neck to find your baggage, you can get a notification when it comes in range.
Reconnection alerts are turned off by default, you can turn them on by tapping on Settings -> General -> Reconnection alert
Viewing the location of your tag on the map
You can view the last known location and time of your tag on the map. Tap on the Location Arrow button at the bottom of the screen to open the map. You will see the location of your tag, indicated by a green pin when the tag is connected to the phone, and a red pin when the tag is disconnected. Tapping on the pin will show you when the tag was last seen.
The location feature works only when your location services are turned on. To turn on location services, please do the following:
On Android, go to Settings -> Privacy and safety -> Location
On iOS, go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services
Does the tag have GPS?
No, the tag does not have GPS and relies on your smartphone's Location Services (GPS, cell tower triangulation, WiFi) to figure out the last known location.
Crowd GPS
The crowd GPS feature can help you find lost items even if they've been moved.
To enable crowd GPS, go to Settings -> Share and tap on Disabled button under crowd GPS.
Sharing you tag with friends & family
To share your Yoky Tag, with say your friend, go to Settings -> Share and tap on the Tap to share your tag button. Your friend can download and install the Yoky Tag app for free, and login into the app. Next, enter the email address of your friend (the email used to login) and a request will be sent to your friend's app. Once your friend accepts your request, the tag is shared between you and your friend.
When the tag is shared, your friend will be able to use it just like you would be. Only you or your friend will be able to be connected to the tag at any one point of time, however both of you will be able to see where the tagged item is.
You can share your tag with an unlimited number of people.
Finding your shared tag
Finding your tag works a little differently when shared.
If you are connected to the tag, then you can tap on the center button to get the tag to ring. Your friend will be able to see that the tag is connected to you.
If your friend is connected to the tag, then you will be able to see that it is connected to him/her, and your friend will be able to tap the center button to find the tag.
If both of you are not connected to the tag, both of you will see the last known location of the tag, irrespective of who was last connected to it.
Getting alerts
Getting alerts works a little differently when shared
When you are connected to your tag and leave behind your phone or your tag, you will get an alert, and the last known location is updated on your friend's app.
If your friend was connected to the tag, then only she/he will get the alert and your app will be silently updated with the location the tag was last seen.
Both you and your friend can separately customise your sounds and alerts based on location.
Stop sharing
To stop sharing the tag, you can go to Settings -> Share and tap on your friend's name to stop sharing. Your friend's name will appear on the sharing list for a while, because it is removed from the list only when your app gets a confirmation from your friend's app that the sharing has been stopped.
If the tag has been shared with you, then you can stop sharing from Settings -> Share
Why pedometer?
A lot of us care about our fitness, and one definite way to improve it is by measuring the daily activity. However, doing this can be expensive and require you to wear some sort of device on your arm, hip or chest. Given that you'll be carrying the Yoky Tag with you most of the day, especially with your keys or wallet, we thought it will be helpful to build in a pedometer feature as well. You can use the Yoky Tag as a pure pedometer and attach it to your shoe if you want.
While activity tracking is a secondary feature, the Yoky Tag is super accurate in measuring your steps - it does not get affected by vibrations from cars, bikes, or flights. And this accuracy is high irrespective of placing the tag in your pockets or socks or shoes.
How does the pedometer work?
Your Yoky Tag has a built in high resolution 3 axis accelerometer which measures your steps, intensity of activity and uses that to estimate the distance moved and calories burnt.
To turn on the pedometer mode, tap on the mode button on the bottom right of the screen and change the mode from default to pedometer. Please note that using the tag in pedometer mode reduces battery life to ~9 months for average usage
Once you turn on the pedometer mode, the tag measures the number of steps you've taken and regularly updates the app. The pedometer feature works even when your tag and smartphone are not connected. Also, you can set targets for your activity level and have the Yoky app give you reminders (max 2 per day) to get up and start moving!
What does the data mean
The pedometer data is presented to you in a very simple manner. There are 3 charts, the first of which is a summary chart showing you the number of steps you've taken in comparison to your target. It also shows you the distance you've moved and calories burnt if you have entered your height and weight. You can tap on the charts below to view your activity data for the last 7 days.
The second chart is a simple visualisation of the intensity of your activity level. It helps you understand what percentage of your activity was more intense (fast walking, jogging, climbing stairs, etc)
The third chart lets you see the trend in amount of daily, in minutes, the last seven days.
Please note that we recommend you purchase a high end GPS based pedometer if you plan to use this feature for professional or medical purposes.
Does the phone need to be around the tag for pedometer to work?
No, your phone does not need to be around your tag for the pedometer to work. The pedometer feature is built into the tag, and it can store data for upto 7 days.
How accurate is the pedometer?
The pedometer error rate is less than 5% irrespective of where you put it on your body (shoes, socks, tight or lose pockets, shirt pocket), and it is 99%+ accurate in not measuring steps when you are driving or are in a cab or a flight. With Yoky Tag, you can be confident that the activity numbers you are seeing are real and focus on monitoring and improving your fitness!
Battery life
The Yoky Tag uses a replaceable CR3032 Lithium 3V battery that lasts for ~12 months. These are conservative estimates, you can get better or worse battery life depending on your usage. The battery life drops by ~25% if you use the tag in pedometer mode.
Click here to view the detailed calculationsWhen your battery goes below 5%, your app will warn you and you can get the battery replaced at a watch store nearby or order one online and replace it yourself. You can also view the battery level by going to
Settings -> Others -> Advanced. The battery is not recycleable, so please ensure you dispose it appropriately.
Hardware overview
The Yoky Tag contains a 32-bit, 256KB ARM Cortex M0 SOC from Nordic Semiconductor. It also contains a 14 bit 3-axis accelerometer and a 85dB piezo electric buzzer.
The Yoky Tag is water resistant using a specially designed hydrophobic coating, so, if your tag gets wet, just shake it a few times and let it dry and it will work fine.
Safety
The Yoky Tag is perfectly safe to use in daily life and to carry on flights. However, please ensure that the tag is not swallowed in whole or parts by any humans or animals. Also, please ensure that the tag is not set on fire or crushed under heavy weights.
